Administrative Law
The Administrative Law section meets quarterly.  The next meeting will be on Monday, December 9, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

DMV Administrative Hearings.  Tiffany Thomas, Driver Licensing Manager and former DMV Hearing Officer is the guest speaker.  Her topic is “Division of Motor Vehicles Administrative Hearings:  Process Overview and Best Practices.”  Included will be observations about “best practices” for those advocating before DMV that will assist the agency in making decisions that are timely and just.  Among other subject matter, DMV hearings include driver license actions related to DUI, which may also have given rise to parallel criminal proceedings.  Ms. Thomas will be available to answer questions which can be submitted in advance to sections@alaskabar.org.  Elections will also be held. 1 General CLE Credit.  Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.

Admiralty Law

Alaska Native Law
The Alaska Native Law section will meet on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street.  Also, please welcome new co-chair Jana Turvey. 

Federal Funding for Tribal Child Support Programs.  The guest speakers will be Jessie Archibald, attorney for Central Council/Tlingit and Haida’s IV-D Child Support program, and Harold Green, attorney for Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association’s IV-D Child Support program.  They will discuss federal funding for tribal child support programs, and the unique features of their programs.  A representative of the state’s Child Support Services Division (Alaska’s state IV-D program) has been invited to join the panel.  Ms. Archibald will also discuss the status of the litigation over tribal child support jurisdiction currently before the Alaska Supreme Court.  Holly Handler, Alaska Legal Services, will moderate. 1 General CLE Credit. Alternate Dispute Resolution
The ADR section will jointly with the Family Law section (and the Collaborative Law group) on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at 12 noon, Snowden Training Center, 820 W 4th Avenue, Anchorage (follow signs to Training Room).  Juneau participants can meet at the Department of Law, Dimond Courthouse, 5th Floor conference room.

Uniform Collaborative Law Act. Harry Tindall, Uniform Law Commissioner, will discuss the Act with a focus on family law matters. Mr. Tindall is a national expert in family law and an enthusiastic supporter of collaborative law for these matters. His biography, a summary of the Act and the Act itself are on each section’s webpage. 1General  CLE credit.  Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.

The Alternate Dispute Resolution Section will not otherwise meet in December 2013.

Bankruptcy Law
The Bankruptcy Law section will NOT have a regular December meeting.  Instead, plan to attend the Bean-a-Fit on Friday, December 6, 2013, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  (Note the date change due to the loss of the 341 room.  This is the last “event” to be held in Room 250!)

Business Law  
The Business Law section will NOT meet in December.  Instead, Business Law members are invited to the Healthcare Law section’s meeting on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100. 

Don’t Forget to Follow the Money:  Stark and Anti-Kickback Analysis for Healthcare Transactions.  Every time you do a deal or draft an agreement involving healthcare providers, entities or vendors, you need to think about the anti-Kickback Statute and the Physician Self-Referral Law, affectionately known as the “Stark Law.”  Sandy Johnson, an Owner in the Seattle office of Garvey Schubert Barr, will explain these complicated federal healthcare laws and why healthcare attorneys are not the only ones who need to know. 1 General CLE Credit.   Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.

Corporate Counsel

When is it time to fire a client and how should you do it?  Join in for a roundtable discussion with Bar Counsel Steve Van Goor on the topic of when and how to fire a client and terminate the attorney/client relationship.  Applicable rules will be reviewed and the practical and ethical concerns involved in firing a client, and the lawyer’s common pitfalls will be discussed. 1 Ethics Credit.

Employment Law
The Employment Law section will NOT meet in December.   In celebration of the successful biennial CLE held in November, the Employment Law section chairs have decided to cancel the December section meeting.  The next section meeting will be held on January 8, 2014.  Details will follow.  Until then, Happy Holidays!

Immigration Law
The Immigration Law section will meet on Friday, December 6, 2013, at 12 noon at USCIS, Michael Building, 620 E. 10th Avenue.  (All future meetings will be held at USCIS offices.  And starting in January the section will meet on the 4th Friday of the month.) 

Meeting with USCIS Field Office Director.  Michael Hickman, USCIS Field Office Director, will answer attorneys’ questions and may make announcements.  The exact room will be announced depending on the size of the group and whether there will be call-in participants.  Please email section chair Lea McDermid at lea@leamcdermid.com to RSVP.  Also, please email Lea if you are outside Anchorage and want to call in.  Another meeting will be held on January 31, 2013, with Mr. Hickman.

Intellectual Property Law
The Intellectual Property Law section’s next scheduled meeting is January 28, 2014. Location TBD.

International Law

Real Estate Law

Tax Law
