Administrative Law

Admiralty Law
The Admiralty Law section meets quarterly. The next meeting will be Thursday, November 14, 2013. 

Local Orders and Slip Opinions. The discussion will focus on local orders and on slip opinions issued nationwide since the last meeting addressing maritime personal injury, punitive damages, and other issues pertinent to Alaska.  1 General CLE Credit. Alaska Native Law
The Alaska Native Law section will meet on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street.

Diversity in the Judiciary.  Melanie Osborne, Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of NANA and section co-chair is the guest speaker.  Ms. Osborne will lead a discussion on diversity in the judiciary and discuss the Judicial Council's July 2013l report.  There will also be a brief recap on the section's participation at AFN this year (both the CLE and Elizabeth Peratofich Legal Clinic, and view a brief video Senator Murkowski's office provided for the CLE regarding subsistence.  Elections will be held. .75 Ethics Credit and .25 General CLE Credit. Alternative Dispute Resolution
The ADR section will meet on Thursday, November 14, 2013, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100. 

Dishonesty in Mediation. Glenn Cravez, attorney and section chair, and Drew Peterson, attorney and section member, attended the recent ACR conference in Minneapolis. They will discuss one conference topic "Dishonesty in Mediation - Is it Ethical? Lessons Drawn from Hostage Negotiators." 1 Ethics Credit. Appellate Law
The Appellate Law section will meet on its regular day, November 20, 2013 at 12 noon in Anchorage, Department of Law, 5th Floor Conference Room, 1031 W. 4th Avenue. Juneau and Fairbanks will be by videoconference and all other locations will be telephonic.

Off the Record with Justice Daniel Winfree.  The guest speaker will be Alaska Supreme Court Justice Dan Winfree.  This will be an informal discussion regarding appellate practice and procedure.  Justice Winfree will share his views regarding appellate law and procedure, and discuss his experiences on the Alaska Supreme Court.  1 General CLE Credit.

Bankruptcy Law
The Bankruptcy Law section will meet on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, (one week earlier) at 12 noon.

eRecording. The guest speaker is Vicky Backus, State Recorder, Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Recorder's Office. She will tell members all about eRecording - how it works and how to set up an eRecording account. Most districts now accept eRecording and the Recorder's Office soon plans to have eRecording available for all Alaska recording districts. 1 General CLE Credit. Corporate Counsel

Elder Law

Social Security and Other Benefits.  Robin Schmidt, Public Affairs Specialist with the Social Security Administration, is the guest speaker.  Ms. Schmidt will give an overview of benefits such as Social Security retirement, Social Security Disability, SSI, eligibility issues and appeal processes for these benefits. 1 General CLE Credit.

Estate Planning & Probate Law
The Estate Planning/Probate Law section will meet on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100.

Recently Enacted SB 65 Legislation - Cont'd. Beth Ann Chapman of Faulkner Banfield, Juneau, and David G. Shaftel of Shaftel Law Offices, Anchorage will continue their presentation started at the October meeting. (They both will be telephonic). Family Law

Federal Agency & Congressional Practice Law
The next section meeting will be on November 22, 2013, at 4 p.m. in Washington, D.C. at Crowell & Moring, 1001 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, and at 12 noon in Anchorage at (note this month's location change) the Alaska Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100. The meeting will be telephonic between both offices and members calling in from other locations. 

General Overview of FOIA Exemptions and the Relationship between FOIA and the Privacy Act. Judith Means, a member of the D.C. Bar and a retired Federal Government lawyer will be the guest speaker. Ms. Means will discuss the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the relationship between FOIA and the Privacy Act in information disclosure and protection. 1 General CLE Credit.

Healthcare Law
The Healthcare Law section will meet on Thursday, November 7, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100.

Title IV-D Tribal Child Support Program. Harold Green of Green Law offices, along with an administrator from the program, will discuss the Aleutian Pribilof Island Association, Inc.'s Title IV-D Tribal Child Support Program. They will discuss how the program operates, and what it took to get the program started. The presentation will be followed with a 10-15 minute period for members to ask questions about the Alaska Native healthcare system, to help the section in planning a future presentation entitled "Everything You Always Wondered About Alaska Native Healthcare, But Were Afraid to Ask." 1 General CLE Credit. Immigration Law
The next meeting of the Immigration Law section is scheduled for Friday, December 6, 2013, at 12 noon at USCIS with Michael Hickman, Field Office Director of USCIS. (All future meetings will be held at USCIS offices. And starting in January the section will meet on the 4th Friday of the month.) Mr. Hickman will answer attorneys' questions and may make announcements. The exact room will be announced depending on the size of the group and whether there will be call-in participants. Intellectual Property Law

Law and Community Health Forum
The Law & Community Health Forum meets the second Tuesday of odd-numbered months. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at noon at the Public Defender office, 900 W 5th 3rd floor conference room. 

Substance Abuse, Mental Health, and Anger Management. Vivian Patton from Resolution Services Counseling and Wellness Office will be the guest speaker. New Lawyers
The New Lawyers section meets the third Thursday of odd-numbered months. The next meeting will be on Thursday, November 21, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bethel Courthouse. This site will be connected telephonically in Anchorage at the Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100.  

The Insider's Guide to Bethel. The section presents a panel discussion led by Fourth Judicial District Superior Court Judges Dwayne W. McConnell, Charles W. Ray, Jr, and Standing Master, Magistrate, and interim District Court Judge Bruce G. Ward for an inside look at practice in Bethel. New Alaskan lawyers face not only learning the basics of the practice of law, but also confronting the difficulty of practicing in various judicial districts throughout Alaska. This panel discussion will seek insight about the idiosyncrasies of practice in the Bethel court and helpful insider secrets from the locals. 1 General CLE Credit. Public Contracts Law
Public Contracts Law has changed to a quarterly meeting cycle starting on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at 12 noon at 510 L Street, Suite 500. The Alaska Native Law, Business Law and the Federal Agency & Congressional Practice Law sections are invited to this meeting.  

The Air Force's New Extended Debriefing Process - Why It Will Be Your New Best Friend. Chair Lane Tucker of Stoel Rives will be the speaker. The Air Force has been testing, and is now launching, an extended debriefing process designed to afford offerers the information they need to make informed protest decisions. Come hear all about the nuts and bolts of it, how your company can take advantage of this opportunity (and why it should), and about how the process worked in the real world of a recent protest. 1 General CLE Credit. Social Security Disability Advocacy
The Social Security Disability Advocacy section meets on a quarterly schedule of December, March, June and September.

Torts/Personal Injury Law
The Torts/Personal Injury Law section will meet be on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100.

Rule 30(b)(6) Depositions. Unbundled Law
The Unbundled Law section meets three times a year for 1.5 hours (12 noon to 1:30 p.m.). There will be no November meeting. Workers' Comp Law
The Workers' Comp Law section will meet on Friday, November 1, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100.

Medicaid Liens. Rebecca Cain, Assistant  Attorney General in charge of Medicaid, will  address the section on the Medicaid liens and workers' compensation.  Ms. Cain has in the past - as an assistant AG - defended workers' compensation cases for the State of Alaska. 1 General CLE Credit.
