Administrative Law

Alaska Native Law
The Alaska Native Law section will NOT meet in October. Instead, join other section members in Fairbanks on October 23, 2013, for their annual half-day CLE during the AFN Convention.  Speakers will cover recent court decisions affecting Alaska Natives, problems associated with the ANCSA conveyance of contaminated land, and legal issues associated with subsistence and ANCSA lands. Alternative Dispute Resolution
The ADR section will meet on Thursday, October 10, 2013, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100.

ADR and Convention, CLE and Section Meeting Planning. Mary Ellen Ashton, section member and the Bar’s MCLE Director, will lead a roundtable discussion on 1) whether ADR wants to apply to present a one-hour CLE at May 7-9, 2014 Bar Convention and, if so, topics and presenters?; 2) Bar convention participation does not waive the requirement to sponsor a full- or half-day CLE program every two years and ADR is due for one in 2014. Appellate Law
The Appellate Law section is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at 12 noon at the Department of Law, 5th Floor Conference Room, 1031 W. 4th Avenue. 

Ninth Circuit Judge Morgan Christen.  The section welcomes back Circuit Judge Morgan Christen of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth District.  Judge Christen will reflect on how appellate judging on the Circuit differs from appellate judging on the Alaska Supreme Court, and suggest lessons for practitioners appearing in the two different venues – both in terms of written advocacy and oral advocacy.  1 General CLE Credit.  Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.

Bankruptcy Law  
The Bankruptcy Law section will meet on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, (one week earlier) at 12 noon at the Bankruptcy Court, 605 W. 4th Avenue.

Business Law  
The Business Law section’s next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at 12 noon at Stoel Rives, 510 L Street, Suite 500.  (NOTE that this is a new meeting location for this section.) 

Uniform Commercial Code - Rick Goldfarb, a partner in Stoel Rives Seattle office, a 25-year member of the Alaska bar and a frequent speaker on UCC matters, will present a refresher on the basics of UCC Article 9, the amendments that became effective on July 1, 2014, and as some traps to avoid in advising debtors or creditors.  There will also be time for UCC Q&A.  Pizza will be provided by Stoel Rives.  1 General CLE Credit.

Corporate Counsel
The Corporate Counsel Law section will meet on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at 12 noon at Stoel Rives, 510 L Street, Suite 500.

Estate Planning Considerations in Structuring Executive Compensation Plans. In-house counsel are frequently involved in the structuring of compensation and bonus pay structures.  We are also asked to assist fellow employees in how to start to  approach their estate plans.  Brian Durrell, partner of the Durrell Law Group, and retired CPA specializing in estate tax, will lead the discussion on the estate impacts of various business compensation structures and guide members through a basic understanding of estate planning concepts and vehicles.  While the subject is complex because of the intersection of tax and probate laws, Brian will break it down for us so that we can add value to the discussions within our respective organizations.  1 General CLE Credit. Elder Law

Estate Planning & Probate Law

Recently Enacted SB 65 Legislation.  Beth Ann Chapman of Faulkner Banfield, Juneau, and David G. Family Law

Federal Agency & Congressional Practice Law

Healthcare Law
The Healthcare Law section will meet on Thursday, October 3, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100. 

Health Insurance Exchange.  This will be a roundtable discussion of Alaska's Health Insurance Exchange and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Immigration Law
The next meeting of the Immigration Law section is tentatively scheduled for Friday, December 6, 2013, at 12 noon at USCIS.  All future meetings will be held at USCIS offices.  And, starting in January the section will meet on the 4th Friday of the month.   Watch for more information by email and/or in Section News

International Law
The International Law section will meet on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at 12 noon at the Federal Public Defender office, 601 W. 5th Avenue, Suite 800.

Many Future Planning Items. Discussion will focus on: 1)  final planning for the Oct. 29th CLE, “Be a Lawyer, See the World;”  2)  ideas for future speakers;  3)  scheduling a meeting for Xander Meise to speak in person to the section in late Feb. or early March, when she’ll be in the Anchorage area to talk about her work in Zambia and Cambodia; and 4) whether the section should apply to participate in a one-hour CLE at the Bar Convention May 7-9, 2014.   Phone-ins from other Alaska locations are welcomed and encouraged.
