Administrative Law

Bankruptcy Law  
The Bankruptcy Law section will meet on Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bankruptcy Court, 605 W. 4th Avenue. (A reminder that the courthouse West entrance doors lock at noon; use the East entrance if you are not there by noon.)

Alaska’s Economy – Present and Future.  The guest speaker is Scott Goldsmith, Professor Emeritus, Economics, with the University of Alaska, Anchorage, and public policy researcher at the Institute of Social and Economic Research at UAA since 1975.  Dr. Goldsmith holds a Ph.D. in Economics.  In addressing Alaska’s past and present economy he will also include factors impacting the economy. 1 General CLE Credit.   Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.

Corporate Counsel

The Alaska Entity Transaction Act - Come learn about the Alaska Entity Transaction Act that was passed and signed into state law this year. Employment Law

Environmental/Natural Resources Law  
The Environmental/Natural Resources Law section will meet on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100.

The State of Alaska’s Effort to Become the Primary Agency for Section 404 Permits.  Michelle Bonnet Hale, Director of the ADEC Division of Water, and Steve Ross, Assistant Attorney General, Environmental Law Section, Alaska Department of Law, will discuss Senate Bill 27, the 2013 legislation authorizing the State to evaluate and pursue state assumption of the Section 404 Program under the Clean Water Act; an overview of the current 404 program; the process of state assumption, including pros and cons; state programmatic general permits; and future decision points. 1 General CLE Credit. Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.

Estate Planning & Probate Law 
The Estate Planning/Probate Law section will meet on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100. 

Advanced Health Care Directives.  The anatomy of the Alaska statutory form and other documents commonly used by clients in the Alaska community will be reviewed, along with what lawyers should know about these documents in order to better assist clients with healthcare planning.  Members will be provided with some sample language that may help clients to better instruct their health care agents. 1 General CLE Credit.  

Annual Section Meeting.   In addition to the regular meeting, the Alaska Bar Rules require sections to hold an annual section meeting and elections by the fall of each year.  The sectin executive committee must be made up of a minimum of 5 section members appointed for three-year terms. We currently have 6 members on our executive committee:

Federal Agency & Congressional Practice Law

Immigration Law
The Immigration Law section will meet with the US Citizenship and Immigration Service on Friday, September 27, 2013, at 12 noon at the Law Offices of Lea McDermid, 310 K Street, Suite 200.  (NOTE the day and location change for this month.)

Meet with New USCIS Anchorage Field Office Director. The new director, Michael Hickman, will discuss his background, other USCIS staff or policy changes, and answer members’ questions.  Please email section chair Lea McDermid your questions for Mr. Hickman in advance of the meeting at lea@leamddermid.com.  If there is time after meeting with Mr. Hickman, members will elect new executive committee members and discuss future meetings and events for the section. If there is not enough time for the latter, another meeting will be scheduled for this purpose.  CLE Credits TBD after the meeting.

International Law
The International Law section will meet on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at 12 noon at the Federal Public Defender office, 601 W. 5th Avenue, Suite 800.

Alien Tort Claims Act.  Our speaker will be Alexandra Meise Bay, from the law firm of Foley Hoag, in Washington, D.C.  She will be speaking by telephone about the Alien Tort Claims Act. Law and Community Health Forum    
The Law & Community Health Forum meets every other month.  The section will meet on Monday, September 16, 2013, at noon at the Public Defender office, 733 W. 4th Avenue, Suite 300. (NOTE the day change for this month.)

New Lawyers
The New Lawyers section meets the third Thursday of odd-numbered months. The first fall meeting will be on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100.  

How to Make Friends and Influence People:  A Bar Primer.  The meeting will offer recent admittees and curious newer lawyers a unique privilege - the opportunity to learn about the Alaska Bar Association and a new lawyer's potential role in it from some of the key professionals’ integral in the Association's development and continuing vitality.   Presenters include Executive Director Deborah O'Regan; Bar Counsel Steve Van Goor; Section/Fee Arbitration Coordinator JoAnne Baker; and CLE Director Mary DeSpain. They will address three broad issues:  what the Bar can do for new attorneys; what new attorneys can do for the Bar; and how the discipline system works.  Within these broad topics day-to-day questions will be addressed such as each presenter's role at the Bar Association, under what circumstances a new lawyer might contact each presenter, how to best approach communication with Bar Staff, and specific ways to get involved with various committees. The Real Estate Law section's September meeting was cancelled.

Social Security Disability Advocacy

Tax Law

Workers’ Comp Law
The Workers’ Comp Law section will meet on a different day for September only due to a Bar Association conflict: Monday, September 9, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bar office, 840 K Street, Suite 100. 

Workers’ Compensation Division Update.  Division Director Michael Monagle will bring the section up to date regarding workers’ compensation.  As members know,  there is a new software program being used for some electronic filing.  And the division has been exploring changes in the law regarding medical benefits.
