Administrative Law
The Administrative Law section meets quarterly. The next meeting is Monday, March 4, 2013. 

Juneau Members:  You can attend section meetings at the Department of Law in the Dimond Courthouse (123 Fourth Street), 5th floor conference room.  Because the 5th floor is secure, access the meeting by going first to the department’s reception area on the 6th floor, opposite the main elevators. Alaska Native Law
The Alaska Native Law section will meet on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at 12 noon at the Bar office’s NEW LOCATION, 840 K Street, Suite 100.

State/Tribal Court Relationship Relative to the Indian Child Welfare Act.  Diane Payne, the Director of the Justice for Native Children Project will be the presenter.  Ms. Payne has worked as a trainer, community organizer and advocate for Native children and families for much of the last 30 years and, in addition to lengthy relevant experience, chairs the Alaska State Court Improvement Project’s ICWA Subcommittee, sits on the State’s Children’s Justice Task Force, and is a member of the Alaska State Child and Infant Mortality Review Team. Alternative Dispute Resolution

Appellate Law

Bankruptcy Law  
The Bankruptcy Law section will meet on January 29, 2013, at 12 noon in the U.S. Trustee’s Hearing Room in the Bankruptcy Court, 605 W. 4th Avenue. (A reminder that the courthouse West entrance doors lock at noon; use the East entrance if you are not there by noon.)

Business Law

Corporate Counsel

Environmental/Natural Resources Law

Endangered Species Act issues in Alaska. Estate Planning & Probate Law

Revised Wills/Bequeathing Airline Miles/Advance Care Directives. The meeting will cover these issues:  1) Jeffrey Davis of Manley & Brautigam will discuss of Dan v. Dan, Alaska Supreme Court Op. No. 6724 dated November 16, 2012;  2) Anne Helzer, solo practitioner, will discuss bequeathing unused airline miles based on the New York Times article dated November 25, 2012, and also 3) new advance care directives in use in many states based on the New York Times editorial dated November 25, 2012. Family Law + Tax Law Joint Meeting

Splitting Tax Liability is Harder than Splitting Up.  Attorney and Tax Law co-chair Christy Lee will be the guest speaker.  Separately and for 5-10 minutes, Pete Braveman from Fairbanks - a former custody investigator and owner of Custody Solutions  - will talk about his early neutral evaluation program and its success rate.  1 General CLE Credit.

Health Law

International Law

Update on Arab Spring.  Gregg B. Brelsford will be our speaker.  He is the principal advisor at Microsoft in Egypt. His area of work includes governance, anti-corruption, rule of law and intellectual property. Municipal Law
The next meeting of the Municipal Law section is Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at noon at at 12 noon at Anchorage City Hall, Suite 730.  (Please note location change.)

The Way Ahead for AMAA and IMLA 2014 plus Home Rule Municipalities and Priority Liens Created By Ordinance.   Per the recommendation from the AMAA business meeting on November 13, 2012, the section will meet to discuss the way ahead for AMAA 2013 and following years since we now know AML will be meeting in Anchorage for the indefinite future.   There will also be some discussion about IMLA 2014 which will be held in Anchorage.

Also, at the request of Mitch Seaver, Ketchikan City Attorney, we are adding a discussion about "Home Rule Municipalities and Priority Liens Created By Ordinance".   For background you may want to review the recent Alaska Supreme Court case: No. 6738 S-14215 Cutler v. New Lawyers
The New Lawyers section changed its regular meeting date to the third Thursday of odd-numbered months.  The next meeting will be on Thursday, January 17, 2013, at 12 noon in two locations:  the Palmer Courthouse, Jury Assembly Room; and the Bar’s NEW LOCATION, 840 K Street, Suite 100.

The Insider’s Guide to Practice in the Palmer Court.  The section presents a panel discussion led by Third District Court Judges Eric Smith, David Zwink, John Wolfe and Magistrate Craig Condie on “The Insider’s Guide to Practice in Palmer.”  New Alaskan lawyers face not only learning the basics of the practice of law, but also confronting the difficulty of practicing in various judicial districts throughout Alaska.  This panel discussion will provide some insights about practice in the Palmer court and perhaps some insider secrets from the locals. 1 General CLE Credit.  All new lawyers and experienced practitioners interested in learning new insights from the bench are encouraged to attend. Real Estate Law
