Administrative Law
The Administrative Law section meets quarterly. The next regularly scheduled meeting is December 3, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office. 

Juneau Members:  You can attend section meetings at the Department of Law in the Dimond Courthouse (123 Fourth Street), 5th floor conference room.  Because the 5th floor is secure, access the meeting by going first to the department’s reception area on the 6th floor, opposite the main elevators. This location will be connected by conference call.

Admiralty Law
The Admiralty Law section meets quarterly.  The next meeting will be Thursday, November 8, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Local Orders and Slip Opinions.  The discussion will focus on local orders and on slip opinions issued nationwide since the last meeting, addressing maritime personal injury, punitive damages, and other issues pertinent to Alaska.  Elections will also be held.  1 General CLE Credit. Alaska Native Law
The Alaska Native Law section will meet on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office. 

Mills v. US and Doyon et al.  Jamie Linxwiler and Josh Van Gorkom of Guess & Rudd P.C. will discuss a very interesting RS 2477 case now on appeal to the 9th Circuit.  The case presents a broad spectrum of legal issues, including mining law, ANCSA, and the finality of patents.  But mostly it is about RS 2477 in general and, specifically, private party standing to bring RS 2477 claims - one of the current topics in RS 2477 case law.  Doyon and the US prevailed, and the miner, as a private claimant of a public right, was held not have prudential standing to bring a RS 2477 claim.  The case also presented 11th Amendment and ANCSA land rights issues.  1 General CLE Credit.  Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.

Alternative Dispute Resolution
The ADR section will meet on Thursday, November 8, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Appellate Law
The Appellate Law section’s next meeting has been changed to Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at 12 noon at the Department of Law, 5th Floor Conference Room, 1031 W. 4th Avenue.  

This will be a video-conferenced (as well as telephonic) presentation by Alaska Supreme Court Chief Justice Walter Carpeneti.  Justice Carpeneti will talk about Alaska Supreme Court cases which were the most interesting or influential during his tenure on the court.  Watch for more information regarding locations in December’s Section News and emails.

Bankruptcy Law  
The Bankruptcy Law section will meet on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at 12 noon in the U.S. Trustee’s Hearing Room in the Bankruptcy Court, 605 W. 4th Avenue.

Employment Law

Workplace Investigations Best Practices:  When and How to Conduct an Effective Investigation.  Co-chair Danielle Ryman and Sarah Fischer of Perkins Coie, LLP will discuss issues surrounding workplace investigations including when an employer should or must conduct an investigation, the framework for an effective workplace investigation, preservation and waiver of the attorney-client privilege, and recent Alaska case law concerning the role of investigations in an employer's disciplinary action. 1 General CLE Credit.  Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.

Environmental/Natural Resources Law  
The Environmental Law section will meet on a different day this month – Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Shale Oil Development.  Shale oil development raises a number of legal and policy issues that differ from those for the oil and gas developments that have been the historical norm in Alaska.  The presenter will be Pat Galvin, Vice President of External Affairs and Deputy General Counsel at Great Bear Petroleum Operating, LLC, a company pursuing shale oil development on Alaska’s North Slope.  Come hear Mr. Galvin provide an update on Great Bear’s activities, and participate in a discussion of some of the issues surrounding Alaska’s shale oil development. 1 General CLE Credit. Estate Planning & Probate Law 
The Estate Planning & Probate Law section will meet on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at 12 noon in at the Bar office.

Case Law Roundtable.  This will be a roundtable discussion on Pestrikoff v. Estate of Morrison (June 8, 2012), with appellate attorneys Patrice Icardi and Roberta Erwin. This case is regarding the application of divorce law to probate property.  Also included will be a discussion about pre-death gifting, focusing on donative intent with a review of Ware v. Health Law

International Law

Future of the International Law Section.  Members will be discussing the future of the section at tomorrow’s meeting and whether changes need to be made to the meetings to increase member participation or come up with other ideas to keep the section going and interesting for all. Law and Community Health Forum    
The Law & Community Health Forum meets every other month.  The next meeting is Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at 12 noon at OPA, 900 W. 5th Avenue, 3rd Floor.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.  Tommy O’Malley is the featured speaker.  Mr. O’Malley has been  an educational and legal advocate for people effected by FASD for over 20 years.  He has  been a classroom teacher, educational and legal advocate for people effected by FASD.  Mr. O’Malley is a state certified FASD educator and lecturer.  He is also the parent of children with FASD and has served as a parent navigator on FASD diagnostic teams.  He will be speaking on:
FASD behavioral manifestations in children and adults; How FASD affect  the brain; How to recognize FASD; Why the FASD population is overly represented in the legal system; What we need to know to mitigate the effects of FASD;

New Lawyers
The New Lawyers section is changing its regular meeting date to the third Thursday of odd-numbered months.  The next meeting will be on Thursday, November 15, 2012, at 12 noon at both the Rabinowitz Courthouse in Fairbanks (Room TBA) in Anchorage in Room 1860 of Atwood Building. 

The Insider’s Guide to Practice in Fairbanks.  The New Lawyers section presents a panel discussion led by Superior Court Judges Michael A. MacDonald and Michael P. McConahy on “The Insider’s Guide to Practice in Fairbanks.”  New Alaskan lawyers face not only learning the basics of the practice of law, but also confronting the difficulty of practicing in various judicial districts throughout Alaska.  This panel discussion will provide some insights about practice in Fairbanks and perhaps some insider secrets from the locals.  Fairbanks new lawyers and experienced practitioners interested in learning new insights from the bench are encouraged to attend in person.  Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.  1 General CLE Credit.
