Administrative Law
The Administrative Law section meets quarterly. There will be a September meeting.  However, since the normal meeting date falls on Labor Day, a one-time meeting date change as well as topic/speaker are TBA.  As soon as information is available, an email will be sent to section members and posted on the Bar’s website.  Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.

Juneau Members:  You can attend section meetings at the Department of Law in the Dimond Courthouse (123 Fourth Street), 5th floor conference room.  Because the 5th floor is secure, access the meeting by going first to the department’s reception area on the 6th floor, opposite the main elevators. This location will be connected by conference call.

Admiralty Law
The Admiralty Law section meets quarterly.  The next meeting will be Thursday, September 13, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Local Orders and Slip Opinions.  The discussion will focus on local orders and on slip opinions issued nationwide since the last meeting, addressing maritime personal injury, punitive damages, and other issues pertinent to Alaska.  Elections will also be held.  1 General CLE Credit. Alaska Native Law (Joint with Estate Planning/Probate Law)
The Alaska Native Law section will meet jointly with the Estate Planning/Probate Law section on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at 12 noon in Room 240 of the Atwood Building (1st set of elevators). NOTE: this is a date change for Estate Planning/Probate and a different location for both.

Alaska Native Corporation Stocks – Wills, Restrictions and Title.  Topics will include:  1) Native stock wills under AS 13.16.705, including hard copy examples from one or more Native corporations; 2) Restrictions on transferability of Native corporation shares; 3) A brief presentation from representatives for shareholder services for CIRI, BBNC, NANA and others on how to interact with their staffs in confirming title to stock; and 4) Issues in drafting wills under state law for owners of Native corporation shares.  A Q&A session will follow.  Speakers will be announced as soon as confirmed.  1 General CLE Credit.  Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.

Alternative Dispute Resolution
The ADR section will meet on Thursday, September 13, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

In-School Peer Mediation, October CLE and Other Plans.  The first season meeting we will have guest speaker Janice Banta.  Ms. Banta works at Denali Montessori and helps run their in-school peer mediation program.  Many members are familiar with the success of this program and similar programs in schools citywide and statewide.  She will provide a brief update on Denali's program including a heads up on a short-term funding challenge.  Also discussed will be plans for the coming year as well as the section-sponsored two half-day CLEs on October 3: A.M. - “Gain the Edge!© Negotiation Strategies for Lawyers” and P.M. - “Negotiation Ethics:  Winning Without Selling Your Soul.”  Both CLEs are with Marty Latz at the Anchorage Hotel Captain Cook.  Register for either or both CLEs or view more information.

Appellate Law
The Appellate Law section will meet at 12 noon on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at the Department of Law, 5th Floor Conference Room, 1031 W. 4th Avenue.  Please note that the section's meeting schedule has changed to the third Wednesday of every odd-numbered month. 

State and Federal Appellate Update.  The Clerk of Appellate Courts Marilyn May will address Rules Committee developments potentially impacting state appellate practice.  Brewster Jamieson, current Chair ofthe District of Alaska Lawyer Representatives, will discuss the recently concluded Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference. 1 General CLE Credit.

Bankruptcy Law  
The Bankruptcy Law section will not hold its regular meeting in September.  Watch for information for the October 30, 2012, meeting.

Business Law

Corporate Counsel
The Corporate Counsel Law section will meet on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at 12 noon Stoel Rives, 510 L Street, Suite 500.

Retaliation Liability Update.  In-house Counsel must be experts in many areas of the law, and a key one is understanding the legal protections in place to prevent retaliation against employees who alert regulators and others to their safety or legal concerns.  The outlines of proper conduct are challenging to discern so join our section meeting and learn more about the dangers of retaliation, and ideas for heading it off and preventing its occurrence in your work place.  Doug Parker, a partner with Littler Mendelson, will lead the discussion on the latest developments in retaliation law, including recent decisions by OSHA and the SEC.  1 General CLE Credit.   Pizza will be served.   Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.

Elder Law
The Elder Law section will meet not meet in September.  Instead, please plan to attend the section-sponsored CLE “Power of Attorney Hot Topics & a Guided Tour of the Uniform Power of Attorney Act.”  It will be held on Friday, September 28, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Anchorage Hotel Captain Cook.  See registration for more information and to sign up.

Employment Law
The Employment Law section meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at 12 noon was canceled due to inclement weather

CANCELED.  Surreptitious Taping in the Workplace:  Is it Lawful, Ethical, and Admissible?  Gregory Fisher of Davis Wright Tremaine and section co-chair, will discuss the legal, ethical and practical issues related to surreptitious taping in the workplace.  Tentatively 1 General CLE Credit.  Ethics credit will be determined after the meeting.  Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.

Environmental/Natural Resources Law  
The Environmental Law section will meet on Friday, September 28, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.  NOTE:  This is a day change for this month only. 

Planning and Organization.  You are invited to meet with other section members to help plan this coming year’s programs – November, January, March, and May.  This will be an organizational and planning meeting of the section.  The chairs are looking for your suggestions to maintain the quality of the section’s presentations…what would you like to see presented and/or who would you like to hear as a speaker?  Elections will be held for those who asked to be nominated to the executive committee.  Please bring your lunch and your ideas to the Atwood Building, 550 W. 7th Avenue, Suite 1900.

Estate Planning & Probate Law (Joint with Alaska Native Law)

Family Law
The Family Law section will meet on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Basic Child Support Calculations Primer/Refresher.  The discussion will focus on working through hypothetical basic child support calculations.  Presenter's are Andrew Rawls and Erinn Briann, both Child Support Specialists with CSSD.  (Note that the section will hold a future meeting to cover issues related to self-employment income and child support calculations.) 1 General CLE Credit.  Phone-ins from other locations in Alaska are welcomed and encouraged.

Health Law
The Health Law section will meet on Thursday, September 6, 2012, at 12 noon at the office of Bankston Gronning O’Hara, 601 W. 5th Avenue, Suite 900. Note this is a one-time location change.   

Recent U.S. Supreme Court Health Reform Decision.  Mark Regan, Legal Director of the Disability Law Center of Alaska, is the guest speaker.  Mr. Regan will provide a recap of the recent U.S. Supreme Court health reform decision with an emphasis on the issues pending at the state level this fall, including the possibility of a hybrid Exchange and also the possible Medicaid expansion opt-out.  1 General CLE Credit. Immigration Law
The Immigration Law section’s next quarterly meeting with the DHS will be on Thursday, October 4, 2012, at 12 noon at the Department of Homeland Security offices in Anchorage, 620 10th Avenue on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

The October meeting will be with USCIS Field Office Director Bernadette Nocerino-Doody.  Under the DACA plan, eligible young undocumented immigrants who pay a $465 application fee and receive approval from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will be given legal authorization to work and a two-year deferral from deportation.  To be eligible, immigrants must be younger than 31 and have arrived in the United States before age 16 have resided continuously in the U.S. for a minimum of 5 years prior to June 15, 2012.  They must also have no criminal record.

International Law

Law and Community Health Forum    
The Law & Community Health Forum meets every other month.  The next meeting is Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at 12 noon at OPA, 900 W. 5th Avenue, 3rd Floor.

Planning and Elections.  The section will hold its annual business meeting to discuss ideas for topics to explore this year and to elect executive committee members.  Members outside can participate telephonically.  Please join us for this important meeting.  The co-chairs want to know what is of interest to the section membership.

New Lawyers

The Insider’s Guide to Practice in Kenai.  This will be a discussion with representatives of the Kenai Bench and Bar on “The Insider’s Guide to Practice in Kenai.”  Kenai Superior Court Judges Anna Moran and Carl Bauman (schedule permitting) and Magistrates Matthew Christian and Jennifer Wells will be on hand.

Since many new lawyers are not only confronted with learning the basics of the practice of law, but also presented with the difficulty of practice in a variety of judicial districts throughout Alaska, this discussion will provide some insights about practice in Kenai and perhaps some insider secrets from the locals.  Here are some of the practices you will hear about.  And bring your questions too!  1 General CLE Credit.

Torts/Personal Injury Law

Workers’ Comp Law
The Workers’ Comp Law section will meet on Friday, September 7, 2012, at 12 noon in Room 602 (1st set of elevators) of the Atwood Building, same building as the Bar office.  Note one-time location change.

Compromise Medicare Set-Aside Arrangement (MSA).  Robert L. Sagrillo of Protocols, LLC, Lakewood, Colorado (bio) will be the telephonic guest speaker. His discussion is based upon CFR 411.47 – please see handouts.  Mr. Sagrillo is the founding member of Protocols.  The firm specializes in medical planning for parties involved in workers’ compensation and personal injury liability cases.  1 General CLE Credit.
