Alaska Native Law
The Alaska Native Law section will meet on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.
Legal Developments Post-Tanana. Join Native American Rights Fund Staff Attorney Natalie Landreth and Alaska Legal Services Attorney Holly Handler to discuss the evolving tribal-state relations stemming from the recent decision in State of Alaska v. Native Vill. Of Tanana, 249 P3d 734 (Alaska 2011). Topics to be covered include the ongoing effort of the Alaska Court Rules Committee in developing a rule for the process of registering tribal court decrees for purposes of state enforcement as part of the implementation process following Tanana, and pending litigation before the Alaska Supreme Court considering the full faith and credit due tribal court decrees by the State of Alaska in the wake of Tanana. 1 General CLE Credit.

Social Security Disability Advocacy
The Social Security Disability Advocacy section will meet on Monday, February 13, 2012, at 12 noon in the Bar office.
Revised Rules of Conduct for Social Security Representatives. Attorney Carol Hoch from the Seattle Office of General Counsel (OGC), whose duties include the administration of the Rules of conduct, will cover the basics of OGC’s responsibilities in the area of representative conduct and what is expected of SSA representatives. She will answer questions about new regulations issued by the Social Security Administration revising the Rules of Conduct and Standards of Responsibility for Representatives that took effect January 23, 2012. 1 Ethics Credit. The discussion focused on the Medicare 3.8% tax on net investment income scheduled to start in 2013, the 2009 proposed regulations under §104 allowing exclusion from income for damages received for emotional distress attributable to a physical injury or physical sickness (including for related medical care), as well as the relative likelihood of congressional action in the next year or two on income and transfer taxes. 1 General CLE Credit.
