Administrative Law
The Administrative Law section meets quarterly. The section’s next meeting will be Monday, March 5, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Juneau Members:  You can attend section meetings at the Department of Law in the Dimond Courthouse (123 Fourth Street), 5th floor conference room.  Because the 5th floor is secure, access the meeting by going first to the department’s reception area on the 6th floor, opposite the main elevators. This location will be connected by conference call.

Admiralty Law
The Admiralty Law section meets quarterly.  The next meeting will be Thursday, February 9, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Roundtable Discussion.  The discussion will focus on local orders and on slip opinions issued nationwide since the last meeting, addressing maritime personal injury, punitive damages, and other issues pertinent to Alaska.  The section will also consider an agenda and speakers for an Admiralty Law section CLE.  1 General CLE Credit.

Alaska Native Law
The Alaska Native Law section will meet on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office. 

Legal Developments Post-Tanana.  Join Native American Rights Fund Staff Attorney Natalie Landreth and Alaska Legal Services Attorney Holly Handler to discuss the evolving tribal-state relations stemming from the recent decision in State of Alaska v. Native Vill. Of Tanana, 249 P3d 734 (Alaska 2011).  Topics to be covered include the ongoing effort of the Alaska Court Rules Committee in developing a rule for the process of registering tribal court decrees for purposes of state enforcement as part of the implementation process following Tanana, and pending litigation before the Alaska Supreme Court considering the full faith and credit due tribal court decrees by the State of Alaska in the wake of Tanana.  1 General CLE Credit.

Bankruptcy Law  
The Bankruptcy Law section will meet at 12 noon, February 28, 2012, in the U.S. Trustee’s Hearing Room in the Bankruptcy Court, 605 W. 4th Avenue.

More Chapter 13:  Now it’s your turn!!!  Larry Compton, Chapter 13 Trustee, will give a 15 minute update on the new mortgage Proof of Claim, some recent case decisions in the 9th and other Circuits that might affect Chapter 13 Plans.  Mr. Compton and his staff will answer questions, take criticism, and have an open discussion on how we can all improve our Chapter 13 Processes.  Leave the rotten eggs and tomatoes at home.  1 General CLE Credit.

Corporate Counsel
The Corporate Counsel Law section will meet on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, at 12 noon at Stoel Rives, 510 L Street, Suite 500.

What Does Risk Management Mean to the Legal Department?  Risk management highlights opportunities and threats to achieving business objectives.  Each year it appears that more of the risk oversight function falls to the feet of the legal department, as legislators and regulators increase their focus on compliance.  Melanie Osborne of Stoel Rives LLP and Lynne Seville of Parker, Smith and Feek will lead a discussion on risk management principles, including various roles of the legal department.  1 General CLE Credit.

Elder Law
The Elder Law section will meet on Thursday, February 16, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Aging and Disability Resource Centers.  The guest speakers are Kelda Barstad, Program Manager II for the State of Alaska, Senior and Disability Services, and Lynda Meyer, Senior Services Coordinator for the Municipality of Anchorage.  They will discuss the Aging and Disability Resource Centers and programs that the Municipality has for seniors.  1 General CLE Credit.

Family Law

Health Law

Immigration Law
The Immigration Law will next meet on Thursday, February 9, 2012, at 12 noon at the Department of Homeland Security offices in Anchorage at 620 E. 10th Avenue.

Various Immigration Topics.  The section will meet with USCIS Field Office Director Bernadette Nocerino-Doody.  Discussion topics include the N-648 Medical Disability Waiver for naturalization applicants, case processing times for N-336 Hearings on Naturalization; evidence requests and interviews for marriage-based adjustments; problems with Notices to Appear being forwarded to EOIR without updated addresses; and the local office’s response to non-attorneys being paid to assist applicants or not properly signing the application form and therefore engaging in the unauthorized practice of law. 1 General CLE Credit.

Intellectual Property Law

International Law

Real Estate Law  
The Real Estate Law section will meet on Thursday, February 23, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Title Policies and Endorsements.  Jeff Blake, Vice President, and Howard Hancock, Chief Title Officer, Fidelity Title will explain:
1.  Differences between standard owner's and extended owner's title policy for commercial buildings; and
2.  Common endorsements for policies for commercial buildings with the contrast between the owner's endorsement and the lender's version

Social Security Disability Advocacy    
The Social Security Disability Advocacy section will meet on Monday, February 13, 2012, at 12 noon in the Bar office. 

Revised Rules of Conduct for Social Security Representatives.  Attorney Carol Hoch from the Seattle Office of General Counsel (OGC), whose duties include the administration of the Rules of conduct, will cover the basics of OGC’s responsibilities in the area of representative conduct and what is expected of SSA representatives.  She will answer questions about new regulations issued by the Social Security Administration revising the Rules of Conduct and Standards of Responsibility for Representatives that took effect January 23, 2012. 1 Ethics Credit.   Click here for handouts.

Tax Law
The Tax Law section will meet on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at 12 noon in Room 1270 the Atwood Building, 550 W. 7th Avenue.

Roundtable Discussion.  The discussion focused on the Medicare 3.8% tax on net investment income scheduled to start in 2013, the 2009 proposed regulations under §104 allowing exclusion from income for damages received for emotional distress attributable to a physical injury or physical sickness (including for related medical care), as well as the relative likelihood of congressional action in the next year or two on income and transfer taxes.  1 General CLE Credit.

Unbundled Law    
The Unbundled Law section meets three times a year for 1.5 hours (12 noon to 1:30 p.m.). As soon as dates are determined there will be a replay of the 2007 CLE “Unbundled Legal Services: Creating a Profit Center Using Limited Scope Representation in Your Civil Practice.”  The entire program has CLE credits 2.75 General / 1.0 Ethics.
