Administrative Law
The Administrative Law section meets quarterly. The section’s next meeting will be Monday, March 5, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Juneau Members:  You can attend section meetings at the Department of Law in the Dimond Courthouse (123 Fourth Street), 5th floor conference room.  Because the 5th floor is secure, access the meeting by going first to the department’s reception area on the 6th floor, opposite the main elevators. Alaska Native Law

Appellate Law
The Appellate Law section’s next meeting will be on Thursday, January 19, 2012, at 12 noon at the Department of Law, 5th Floor Conference Room, 1031 W. 4th Avenue.

Unbundled Appellate Practice: Missed Opportunities To Do Pro Bono Appellate Work a Small Chunk at a Time.  Start your new year off with a one-hour Ethics CLE credit.  Bar Association Pro Bono Director Krista Scully and Katherine Alteneder, co-chair of the Unbundled Law section, will discuss how Alaska’s unbundled legal practice rule applies in appellate cases.  The discussion will focus on opportunities the rule creates for appellate practitioners to provide vitally needed pro bono services, even when available time and resources might not allow them to take on an entire appeal.  1 Ethics CLE Credit.

Business Law

Corporate Counsel 
The Corporate Counsel Law section will meet on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at 12 noon at Stoel Rives, 510 L Street, Suite 500.

Effective Management of Government Affairs.  Have you noticed how some organizations communicate with government agencies or legislative bodies and get results?   While others seem to come up short, despite their energetic efforts?  Your organization has interactions with State and Federal government agencies and legislative bodies throughout th year.  Knowing how to effectively manage those interactions, both internally within your company and externally with the public and other stake holders promotes success and builds good relationships for the future.  Patrick Galvin, formerly State Commisioner of the Department of Revenue, Director of the Division of Governmental Coordination, and Petroleum Land Manager for DNR, and now a partner with the law firm KL Gates, will lead our discussion on effective strategies for managing the government affairs activities within your organization.  1 General CLE Credit.  Pizza will be provided.

Elder Law
The Elder Law section will meet jointly with the Estate Planning/Probate Law section on Thursday, January 19, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office.  Health Law section members are also invited. 

Medical and Legal Issues Regarding the Constitutional Rights to Human Tissues. This will be a discussion of the medical and legal issues arising from Erik Woelber’s paper on “Constitutional Rights to Human Tissues” as well as a recent decision by the California Courts. Mr. Woelber is completing his Masters in Interdisciplinary Studies at UAA and this paper was written for a recent Constitutional Law course.  Mr. Woelber graduated with a degree in History of Science, History of Medicine from Yale, where he was Executive Editor of the Yale Herald. He has done medical research at Yale and the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia and was formerly a Medical Editor at a communications company in Philadelphia, PA. He currently works for the RAM Group, an interdisciplinary lab at UAA. Employment Law
The Employment Law section will meet on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office. ADR section members are invited. 

Dispute Resolution Consultants: A Third Form of Alternate Dispute Resolution.  Neither arbitrators nor mediators, DRCs are based on the German model of resolving workforce problems which applies a somewhat more collaborative approach to resolving problems than is customarily seen in the Anglo-American system.  Come learn a little about this newer form of ADR from co-chair Gregory Fisher of Davis Wright Tremaine.  1 General CLE Credit.

Estate Planning & Probate Law
The Estate Planning/Probate Law section will meet jointly with the Elder Law section on Thursday, January 19, 2012, at 12 noon at the Bar office. (Note the one-time day change.)  Health Law section members are also invited.

Immigration Law

Intellectual Property Law
The Intellectual Property Law section meets quarterly.  The next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 12 noon at Davis Wright Tremaine, 701 W. 8th Avenue, Suite 800 (Conoco Phillips building).

Recent Developments in Copyright Law.  Tara Wheatland of Jermain, Dunnagan & Owens, P.C. will provide an overview of several recent developments in copyright law, including the broad-ranging debate over SOPA and PIPA--two bills in Congress aimed at reducing online piracy--and the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision in Golan v. Ashcroft--a case which challenged the constitutionality of a federal law extending the term of copyright protection for some works that were already in the public domain.  Ms. Wheatland specializes in litigation and education law.  Before joining JDO, Ms. Wheatland worked as a Copyright Research Fellow for the Copyright Principles Project at the Berkeley Center For Law & Technology.  As part of that project, Ms. Wheatland was a signatory to a comprehensive proposal for copyright reform, and co-authored an article on copyright statutory damages. 1 General CLE Credit.

International Law

Law and Community Health Forum    
The Law & Community Health Forum meets every other month.  The next regularly scheduled meeting is Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at 12 noon at OPA, 900 W. 5th Avenue, 3rd Floor.

Trauma on Child Brain Development.  The guest speaker will be Joshua Arvidson, MSS., LCSW.  He is the co-founder and Director of the Alaska Child Trauma Center at Anchorage Community Mental Health Services (ACMHS).  Child abuse, neglect and domestic violence have a profound impact on young children.  Young children, who are developing neurologically, biologically and socially are particularly vulnerable to the impact of trauma.  The developmental, attachment and trauma literature, in combination with the growing body of research on the physiological impact of trauma have significant implications for systemic responses to early childhood trauma, particularly the legal systems that influence the care and services children exposed to trauma received. 1 General CLE Credit.

Tax Law

Torts/Personal Injury Law

The Unbundled Law section meets three times a year for 1.5 hours (12 noon to 1:30 p.m.). Workers’ Comp Law
