Administrative Law

The Administrative Law section meets quarterly. The next meeting will be March 7, 2011.

Juneau Members: You can attend section meetings at the Department of Law in the Dimond Courthouse (123 Fourth Street), 5th floor conference room. Because the 5th floor is secure, access the meeting by going first to the department's reception area on the 6th floor, opposite the main elevators. Alaska Native Law

The Alaska Native Law section will meet on Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at 12 noon at the Alaska Bar office.

Alternative Dispute Resolution

The ADR section will meet on Thursday, January 13, 2011, at 12 noon in Room 1270 of the Atwood Building (the same building as the Bar office).
Court Mediation Program.  While specific titles are still a work in progress, Wendy Lyford, the new Family Case Services Coordinator, and Karen Largent, the new Mediation and Facilitation Services Manager for the State Court System as of January 2, 2011, are the guest speakers.  They will do a “meet and greet” with ADR section members and share their thoughts on the court mediation programs.  1 CLE Credit.

Appellate Law

The Appellate Law section will meet on Thursday, January 20, 2011, at the Department of Law, 5th Floor Conference Room, 1031 W. 4th Avenue.

November Surprise. Supreme Court Justice Dana Fabe will be the guest speaker. Her presentation will focus on the last-minute attack she faced in her retention election: how she managed to organize a last-minute opposition, the ethical constraints the Code of Judicial Conduct imposes in such situations, how such attacks affect the independence of our appellate courts, and how the appellate bar might help to avert such attacks in the future. 1 Ethics Credit.

Bankruptcy Law
The Bankruptcy Law section will meet on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at 12 noon in the U.S. Trustee's Hearing Room in the Bankruptcy Court, 605 W. 4th Avenue.
In Re Allard.  Fred Odsen of Hughes Gorski Seedorf Odsen & Tervooren, LLC will discuss Judge MacDonald’s decision in In re Allard, 1 ABR 47 (Bankr. D. Alaska 1990).  In Allard, the Court permitted a deficiency judgment where a secured creditor foreclosed upon real property non-judicially post-petition.  The viability of Allard has arisen in an increasing number of bankruptcy cases in light of the property values.1 General CLE Credit.

Environmental/Natural Resources Law

The Environmental Law's section will meet on Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Lawyers Assistance Committee (LAC). The LAC is continually working to get the word out as to how the committee works and how it responds to requests for information or assistance. Through section meetings has been a valuable route. The LAC would especially like to educate members in understanding when a colleague or client has a possible substance abuse problem or mental health issue and their impact on others. The LAC members who will attend the meeting are John Reese, Suzanne Lombardi and Moira Smith.

Family Law

Settlement Conferences and More. The guest speaker is Senior Judge Donald Hopwood, who conducts judicial resolution conferences through the court system and also private conferences through Hopwood Mediation Services. He will explain the judicial settlement conference project in the Third Judicial District, his approach to settlement conferences, and his experiences working as a judge in the court system. Immigration Law

 New Lawyers

The New Lawyers section meets every odd-numbered month. Due to the Martin Luther King holiday, the section will meet one day later, Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at 12 noon in Room 1270 of the Atwood Building (same building as the Bar office.)

Attorney of the Day Program – Training. The section will have a training seminar for the Attorney of the Day program. This program allows young lawyers to provide pro bono services to low income clients by assisting with intake for Alaska Legal Services Corporation. The commitment for each case is only 1-2 hours. It will give you the opportunity to make a difference and also acquaint yourself with family law issues to help you gain insight and experience in handling such cases. Social Security Disability Advocacy

The Social Security Disability Advocacy section will meet on Monday, January 10, 2011, at 12 noon in Room 1860 of the Atwood Building (same building as the Bar office.)

The Basics. As requested at the organizational meeting, this meeting will focus on the basics of this practice area. Co-Chair Paul Eaglin, Fairbanks, and who has presented at national CLE conferences, will be the speaker.

Topics include: the claims process; getting paid as representative; the expedited fee agreement process and the fee petition process; claims process from first contact with prospective client through representation at the Appeals Council and the final administrative level. Tentatively, Paul is hoping to utilize heavily an internet resource to introduce members to this source and for general information about Social Security practice. For those calling in the plan is to have you view the internet source from your computer along with those in Anchorage. If this works as planned, more information will be sent closer to the meeting. 1 General CLE Credit.
