Administrative Law

The Administrative Law section meets quarterly. The next meeting is Monday, September 13, 2010, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Social Security Hearings and Appeals in Alaska. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has opened a new Office of Disability Adjudication and Review (ODAR) in Anchorage to serve the Alaska region. Nationally, the SSA issues more than half a million hearing and appeal dispositions each year and is the largest administrative judicial system in the world. The guest speaker will be Alaska’s Chief Administrative Law Judge Paul Hebda, who will give a presentation on the SSA disability review administrative appeals process. Judge Hebda was appointed to the Anchorage office December 2009 and has been practicing administrative law since 2003. 1 General CLE Credit.  

Juneau Members: You can attend section meetings at the Department of Law in the Dimond Courthouse (123 Fourth Street), 5th floor conference room. Because the 5th floor is secure, access the meeting by going first to the department’s reception area on the 6th floor, opposite the main elevators. Alaska Native Law

The Alaska Native Law section will meet on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at 12 noon at the Alaska Bar office. 

Free help is only a phone call away… 

Many of us thrive on our high stress legal practices.  But sometimes the pressure overwhelms us or one of our friends, and some lawyers abuse alcohol or drugs as a result of that pressure.  Most of us don’t know who we can turn to that will understand the unique challenges of fulfilling our duties as a lawyer while trying to retain control over our lives.  Surprise!  There is free help only a phone call away.   Suzanne Lombardi of Nelson, Flint & Lombardi and a member of the Alaska Bar’s Lawyers Assistance Committee (LAC) will share with our section the valuable resources that are available at no cost to Alaska Bar Association members to help lawyers through challenging times.  This peer support can have a significant impact on a lawyer’s health and when timely engaged, can significantly aid in the protection of clients’ interest and the lawyer’s business reputation.  Having someone you can talk to confidentially at no cost is an important first step in developing a strategy for gaining control of your situation, whatever it may be.  This session qualifies for 1 ethics credit under Bar Rule 65.   1 Ethics CLE Credit.

Alternative Dispute Resolution

The ADR section will NOT meet in September. It will resume its regular monthly meetings on Thursday, October 8, 2010, at noon at the Bar office. Appellate Law

The Perils and Pitfalls of Writing Appeals in Cases Tried by Another Attorney – How to Detect and Avoid Them. Susan Orlansky of Feldman, Orlansky & Sanders will address the unusual problems presented by handling appeals in cases that other attorneys have tried. 1 General CLE Credit.

Bankruptcy Law  

The Bankruptcy Law section will meet on Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at noon at in the U.S. Trustee’s Hearing Room in the Bankruptcy Court, 605 W. 4th Avenue.
MERS (Mortgage Electronic Registration System). Attorney Eric LeRoy will be the guest speaker. He will discuss current issues and developments concerning MERS.  Attorney Rick Ullstrom has been invited to attend and share any insight he may have regarding MERS, but will not be making a presentation.  As always, specific questions should be directed ahead of time to chair Gary Spraker at gary@cslawyers.net1 General CLE Credit.

Environmental/Natural Resources Law  

The Environmental Law section’s next regularly scheduled meeting is Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at 12 noon at the Alaska Bar office.

Alaska Law Library/UAA ARLIS Collection. Susan Falk of the Alaska Law Library will highlight environmental/natural resource tools available at the law library (major works, practice guides, online databases, research tools, resources for clients, research tips, access to materials for those outside of Anchorage).  Also, Celia Rozen, ARLIS Collection Development Coordinator from the UAA-ARLIS collection - which functions in a library capacity for the Exxon Valdez Trustee Council - will also present. She has an in-depth knowledge of the ARLIS collection.  If time, there will be a roundtable discussion on other sources of information that may be useful to section members.  1 General CLE Credit.

Estate Planning & Probate Law

The Estate Planning/Probate Law section will meet on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Formalities of Wills and Common Challenges to Wills. Tonja Woelber, Russ Nogg and Leonard Anderson will lead a panel discussion covering the basic formalities of making and executing a Will (requirements, statutory presumptions, witness concerns, substantial compliance, common mistakes) and common challenges to Wills (common grounds for Will contests). 1 General CLE Credit.

Family Law

The Family Law section will meet on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at 11:45 a.m. at the Bar office. (Note the earlier start time.)

New Domestic Relations Procedural Order. Third District Presiding Judge Sharon Gleason will discuss the proposed new domestic relations procedural order. There will also be a round table discussion to share experiences on how and if people are providing unbundled legal services. The annual election of section’s executive committee will also be held. Everyone is encouraged to attend.   1 General CLE Credit.

Health Law

Immigration Law

Municipal Law

New Lawyers

The New Lawyers section meets every odd-numbered month. The section will  meet on Monday, September 20, 2010, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Pro Bono Domestic Violence Training. Katherine Alteneder of Alteneder Law, Eagle River, will be the guest speaker. Ms. Alteneder will provide training for individuals interested in taking on pro bono domestic violence cases and who would like more information prior to handling a case by themselves. Also, the New Lawyers Section was recently awarded 1st place in our bar division in the American Bar Association’s Awards of Achievement for our project “Breaking the Cycle: Raising Community Awareness about Domestic Violence.” The September meeting will also include follow up efforts to help educate attorneys about pro bono representation and increase pro bono volunteerism. 1 General CLE Credit.  Pizza will be provided.

Real Estate Law
