Administrative Law

The Administrative Law section meets quarterly. The next regularly scheduled meeting is Monday, June 7, 2010, at 12 noon at the Bar office.

Protection of Personal Information and the State of Alaska’s Settlement with PwCoopers. Ed Sniffen, Senior Assistant Attorney General with the Alaska Department of Law, will discuss Alaska’s new Personal Information Protection Act, AS 45.48, and the State of Alaska’s settlement with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP following a breach of security that compromised the names and social security numbers of former and current public employees. 1 General CLE Credit.  

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be September 13, 2010.

Admiralty Law

The Admiralty Law section will meet on Thursday, May 13, 2010, at 12 noon at the Bar office. This is  the last section meeting until fall.

Nationwide Slip Opinions. This meeting will be a review of slip opinions issued nationwide since the last meeting on maritime personal injury and other issues pertinent to Alaska. 1 General CLE Credit.

Alaska Native Law

The Alaska Native Law section will meet on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at 12 noon at the Alaska Bar office. 
Upcoming Improvements:  ANCSA and the Division of Banking and Securities. The guest speaker will be Jill Farrell of the State of Alaska Division of Banking and Securities.  Ms. Farrell would like the meeting to be an open dialogue and encourages questions, suggestions and ideas.  Please send those to her at ancsa@alaska.gov. She will also invite questions after each topic during the meeting.  1 General CLE Credit.

The second section meeting scheduled for May 20, 201 on ANCSA Stock Inheritence Issues has been canceled.  It will be re-scheduled to a later date.

Alternative Dispute Resolution

The ADR section meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 13, 2010 is canceled. Members are encouraged to attend the May 12, 2010, noon meeting of the International Law section on "Mediation Without Borders" with Ken Cloke.

Appellate Law

The Appellate Law section meets every odd-numbered month. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2010, at the Department of Law, 5th Floor Conference Room (west side), 1031 W. 4th Avenue.

Corporate Counsel

The Corporate Counsel Law section will meet on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, 12 noon at Stoel Rives, 510 L Street, Suite 500. This is the last meeting until September.

Elder Law

The Elder Law section will meet jointly with the Estate Planning/Probate Law and Tax Law sections on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, 12 noon in Room 240 of the Atwood Building (first set of elevators) – same building as the Bar office. Please note the day/date/location change. 

2010 Roth IRA Conversion. Patrick Rumley, a locally based financial planner, will speak on the 2010 Roth IRA Conversion. He will point out not only the basic rules but also ancillary issues that are not widely known. Mr. Rumley will present different modeling scenarios which demonstrate when the decision to convert would be advantageous or perhaps ill advised. All Bar members are encouraged to attend, as the decision to convert this year is something that all Bar members should consider. 1 General CLE Credit.
Special August 11, 2010 Meeting - SB238-Medicaid Waiver Changes.  Terry Hamm, DPA Long-Term Care Coordinator, will speak on the impact of SB238 which changes the needs standard for Medicaid waivers.  it goes into effect in September.  Estate Planning/Probate Law section members are also invited to attend.  1 General CLE Credit.

Employment Law

Discrimination Laws. Environmental/Natural Resources Law

Legislative Review and Rule-Makings by DEC. The guest speakers are DEC Commissioner and section co-chair Larry Hartig and Assistant Deputy Revenue Commissioner for Gasline/Tax and Corporate Counsel Law section chair Marcia Davis. Commissioner Hartig will give an overview of new state legislation and regulations passed this session that may be of interest to members. Asst. Deputy Commissioner Davis will cover oil and gas tax and gas line legislation passed. 1 General CLE Credit.

Public Contracts

Termination for Default by the Government. Christine V. Williams of Perkins Coie will be the guest speaker.Termination for default by the public owner has the potential for serious and dire consequences to any firm threatened by such an action.  It is essential for government contract attorneys to understand the procedures, regulations and analysis that accompanies that decision by the public owner in order to fully protect and advocate for his/her clients.

Cases Tax Court Judges Do Not Want to Hear.  The Alaska Tax Section is excited to have as guest speaker the Honorable Tax Court Judge Thomas Wells. He will speak on “Cases Tax Court Judges Do Not Want to Hear.”  Judge Wells will be holding tax court in Anchorage during the week of June 14th and has graciously agreed to hold a brief presentation and roundtable discussions concerning any lingering questions you may have in regards to tax court’s procedures or tax related issues.  Please join the Alaska Tax Section for this rare occasion to meet and discuss tax court issues. 1 General CLE Credit.
