Morning Program - Writing to Win
8:30-11:45 a.m.

You work with words every day—in your memos, trial briefs, appellate briefs, complaints, client letters—and the words that you choose in those documents convey your ability, confidence and savvy.

Through a combination of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on exercises, you will learn:

• The do’s and don’ts of legal prose
• How to write and edit more efficiently
• How to apply storytelling to your writing of statements of fact
• How studying advertisements can help your arguments

Once learned, the skills to better writing are yours for life.
And you won’t believe how easy some of Stark’s suggestions
apply to your work!

Afternoon Program - Speaking to Win
1:00-4:15 p.m.

More than any other profession, the practice of law depends on the effective use of words,
communication and persuasion. Through the study of some of the great American political
speeches and presentations of recent times, this practical seminar focuses on the basics of
public speaking for all lawyers. Whether you are called upon to give legislative testimony, must
give a presentation to clients, or simply have to talk to the press, this seminar will enable you to
understand what makes the great speakers effective and enable you to use those techniques
yourself as a lawyer.

• Why lawyers are often poor speakers
• What made Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy great communicators
• How to improve your voice, appearance, and delivery
• How to write a speech or testimony to get your message across
• How to use humor in a beneficial way
• How to respond to questions without hesitation
• How to deal with a hostile or indifferent audience
