Dr. John Mundt has been a Staff Psychologist at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center (Chicago, Illinois) since 1992. Although he has clinical experience that crosses the diagnostic spectrum, Dr. Mundt’s passion and primary professional focus relates to veterans’ mental health issues and he has dedicated his career to working with this population. During this presentation on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), he will provide participants with information about the symptoms of PTSD - how it may present in combat veterans – along with information about assessment and diagnostic considerations. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the typical experience of veterans deployed to the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, linking some of the specific warzone experiences with the psychological symptoms they may produce. He will also discuss the experience of “homecoming” and the challenges that veterans face when reintegrating into civilian society and how these challenges can often create a point of intersection for warzone veterans with both the criminal justice and civil legal systems. Finally, there will be a general explanation of the current treatment protocols for PTSD, with an emphasis on factors that could contribute to either success or failure of treatment efforts. Dr. Mundt will utilize anecdotes and case summaries of justice-involved veterans throughout his presentation.
