8:30 - 11:45 a.m. - Professionalism for Profit, for Fun and because it is the Right Thing to Do!

Unlike ethics, where the focus is on the rules, and what lawyers must do, this professionalism course focuses on the kind of behavior we would like to see lawyers engage in, to advance the image of the profession generally.  Through movie and television clips, hypothetical’s and a game show format we will explore what professionalism is, how it will help you in your practice, both financially and with the quality of your life, what it can do to enhance your image in the community and the courts, and the lessons it teaches for dealing with difficult people.  The goal is to see that professionalism is not just something we should aspire to because the bar says we should, but because it enhances immeasurably the quality of life for us, our clients, our colleagues and our profession.

1:00 - 4:15 p.m. - Evidence at the Movies

With speacial guest speakers Judge Louis Menendez and Kirsten Swanson

Using clips from movies and television programs we will explore the letter and the rules of evidence and their application in everyday law practice.  The clips depict evidence issues being raised at hearings and trials through motions and objections and then rulings on those objections.  Over the course of this three hour program we will explore evidence rules dealing with relevance, witness competence, impeachment, privilege, lay and expert opinion witnesses and hearsay.  This is an entertaining program that will raise your consciousness and about and provide immediately helpful suggestions about the rules of evidence.
