This CLE presentation is geared towards professionals who are new to estate planning or who wish to learn the basics about trusts to assist in their non-estate planning practices, techniques relating to estate and tax planning with trusts and the exceptional trust benefits available under Alaska law. 8:00 a.m. Opening Remarks
8:15 a.m. Basics of Trusts Maribeth Conway, The Conway Law Firm, PC will define the terminology and classification of trusts and the various available uses for trusts in personal estate planning and business arrangements. She will highlight common trusts types and purpose, and present the key techniques related to estate and tax planning using trusts.
9:30 a.m. Trust Drafting Highlights – Important Considerations in Trust Drafting BethAnn Boudah Chapman, Faulkner, Banfield, PC will highlight the important issues to consider when drafting or reviewing a trust. The discussion will focus on the basic provisions to include in a trust, whether it is a revocable or irrevocable trust or a “simple” trust or a more complex trust.

11:00 a.m. Alaska’s Unique Laws Stephen E. Greer Esq., will speak on the three Alaska trusts of which every legal practitioner should be aware. Specifically, he will discuss: The Alaska Community Property Trust- the income tax advantage to a surviving spouse of having marital property as classified as community property, Alaska’s unique statute, arguments for and against as to whether our statute will achieve the sought after income tax objective, and bombproofing your estate plan to cure any deficiencies in the statute. The Alaska Dynasty Trust- why you should consider leaving your assets in trust for your beneficiaries instead of making out right dispositions to them.
